Boughrend - The Girallon
Four arms, one purpose: hold you still until the third claw finds its mark.
Role in Its Society
Boughrend rules the deep interior of the Verdant Weald — the tangled, sunless heart of the forest that lies past where woodcutters, herbalists, and trail-wardens will willingly go. It answers to no faction and serves no master, but every community on the Weald's edge plans its life around it just the same. Foragers from Greenbranch mark certain groves as off-limits by tradition alone, unable to say why beyond "that's Boughrend's country." Trappers out of Haltcross Hamlet reroute their lines around a two-mile stretch of canopy where the birdsong simply stops. Even the caravan roads to Brightcrown bend slightly wide of one particular ridge, a detour nobody remembers ordering but everyone still follows.
Stranger still, Boughrend's territory has become an unlikely buffer. Gruffjaw the Vile's gnoll raiders strike hard at the Weald's farms and roads, but their patrols never push into Boughrend's deep boughs — not out of mercy, but because the gnolls learned early and violently that the forest's interior belongs to something worse than they are. Villagers rarely think to thank a monster for keeping a worse one at bay, but the old rangers of Edgewood Garrison have started to notice the pattern.
Appearance Description
Boughrend stands taller than a plow-horse at the shoulder, its bulk built from four thick, ape-like arms rather than the usual two — each ending in a hand of black, curved claws worn smooth and hard as river stone from decades of climbing and killing. Its fur is a mottled wash of moss-green, bark-brown, and lichen-grey, patterned so well against the Weald's understory that it seems to simply resolve out of the shadows rather than approach through them. Old scars cut pale lines through the fur along one shoulder and flank, souvenirs of a rival it drove from this territory long before any living villager was born. Its knuckles are calloused into something almost like bark, cracked and grey, and its small, deep-set eyes hold none of the curiosity of a smarter beast — only a flat, patient attention that fixes on movement and does not let go.

Backstory
The Verdant Weald's deepest folds have always been said to hide more than deer and foxes — unicorns and sprites are the stories told to children, gentle proof that the old magic soaked into the Weald's oldest trees still watches over it. Boughrend is the story nobody tells children. The same ancient magic that is gentle enough to shelter a sprite in a glade is old and wild enough, deeper in, to breed something built purely to hunt and hold ground, and Boughrend has held its stretch of canopy longer than any living memory in Greenbranch reaches.
It was not always undisputed. Years ago, a second, younger male pressed into its territory from the south, and the two fought through a night that flattened a quarter-acre of undergrowth and left both drenched in blood. Boughrend won, and has not been seriously challenged since. It has grown less cautious with the decades, not more — there is no one left in its territory experienced enough to teach it fear. Loggers who trespass, gnoll scouts who wander too far from Gruffjaw's raiding parties, the occasional bear foolish enough to contest a game trail: all of them have taught Boughrend the same lesson, over and over, that its ground is its own.
