Every dawn at Edgewood Garrison, before the watch changes and the patrols ride out, a single bell rings from a small stone chapel tucked behind the barracks — half an offering to Karma, half to Deo, and entirely the work of one man who has learned to stitch a wound and settle a rattled soul with more or less the same steady hands. Brother Ansel Thorwood answers to no rank at Edgewood, and yet there isn’t a warden in the garrison, from the newest recruit to the Marshal himself, who doesn’t know exactly where to find him when it matters.

His hands are calloused and quick, equally at home threading a suture as folding them in prayer, and he carries a well-stocked satchel of bandages, herbs, and oils that rarely leaves his side.
