Role in Its Society

In the open, rolling hill country west of the Great Oak, where the Weald's forest gives way to thinner soil and harder farming on the approach to the Brackish Brinelands road, a single hillside farmstead has spent the last two winters losing more livestock than the family can explain by weather alone. Carrionwing rules nothing and commands no flock — she is, as far as anyone can tell, entirely alone, the last of whatever brood she once belonged to — but she has claimed the wide, empty sky above this one stretch of hill pasture as thoroughly as any territorial predator ever claimed a den.

She has no rivals here because nothing else competes for what she wants. Wolves take the sick and the slow. Carrionwing has simply stopped waiting for sick and slow to happen on its own.

Appearance Description

Carrionwing is a hulking, bald-headed vulture the size of a plow horse, her feathers a mottled ash-gray gone patchy with old scarring across one wing, the legacy of some long-ago fight she survived and whatever she fought did not. Her eyes are a pale, unsettling yellow, fixed and unblinking, and she has a habit of circling at a height just barely visible from the ground — close enough to be noticed, far enough to never quite feel like an immediate threat, until it is.

Backstory

The hill country toward Briarthorn has always been harder ground than the black-soil farmland closer to Brightcrown — thinner topsoil, a rockier bite to the earth that makes for leaner harvests and leaner livestock, a fact of geography rather than misfortune, though it wears on a solitary family the same either way. Carrion birds have always followed hard winters here, drawn by the inevitable losses that come with thin margins and thinner soil. Carrionwing was once part of a larger wake of vultures that did exactly that, and did it patiently, the way vultures are supposed to.

What changed her isn't something anyone in this hill country has ever pieced together — only the pattern she leaves behind. Somewhere along the way, waiting stopped being enough. A weak lamb that should have had another week left just stopped having it. A ewe that was recovering from a bad birth didn't. The rest of her wake moved on to easier hunting grounds eventually, the way vultures do, but Carrionwing stayed, because she had found something better than scavenging: a farmstead isolated enough that nobody would connect one animal's death to the next, and patient enough hunger to simply make the waiting shorter.
