Halvern Greycairn - The Revenant

Halvern Greycairn - The Revenant

Every traveller on the hill path gets asked the same question. Whatever you meant to say, the truth is what comes out.

Role in Its Society

Halvern belongs to no settlement in Emberfall. He is a presence on the unmarked ground between the Emberflow Springs and the sheltering hills that hide Emberveil from every map in the region — the miles of ash and mist a pilgrim has to cross with no road to follow, because Emberveil keeps none. Grieving travelers making for the Kindling sometimes report a quiet man falling into step beside them out of the fog: he corrects a wrong turn, points out ground too soft to trust, and vanishes again before the last hill rises, always at the same distance from the settlement he can apparently never quite reach.

He is not one of Emberveil's own, and he has never once been seen past that last hill. Sevra Hollowshroud has heard enough of these traveler accounts to have a name for him in the Cinderscript, though not his own — she simply calls him the Wayfarer Who Waits. Whether that makes him a guardian of the road or merely something that has decided the road is where it lives, nobody who has spoken to him claims to know for certain.

Appearance Description

Halvern looks, at a glance, like a man who has walked a very long way and stopped for a rest he never quite takes. Medium build, dressed in a traveler's coat gone the color of wet ash, boots worn through and re-soled with scavenged leather, a coil of oiled rope at one hip. It is the details that give him away: his skin is grey and drawn tight over old scarring that never healed, because it never had the chance to, and his eyes carry a low amber coal-light that brightens noticeably whenever he looks straight at a stranger's face. He carries a tall traveling stave, its length notched in small, careful groups — a private tally that has long since run past any number a living hand could easily keep.

He does not appear damaged in any dramatic sense. He appears exactly as he did on the day he stopped being able to finish a journey, and the ash never lets that day end.

Backstory

Nobody in Emberfall ever employed Halvern, and no settlement claims him, because in life he needed no one's employment: he made himself useful. The paths to Emberveil have never had roads — the settlement stays hidden from most maps, with no major road leading in or out — so pilgrims bound for the Kindling have always needed someone who knew the safe ground by heart. Halvern was that someone. For years he walked the hills, setting small cairns of packed ash and stone to mark the places where footing held, and grieving travelers learned to watch for them.

He died partway through one crossing, on ground he had walked a hundred times before, killed by one of the very pilgrims in his charge — for a reason that died with him, and that he has never once spoken aloud since. What he does remember, with a clarity nothing since has dulled, is a face, and a debt that was never settled. He rose from that ash neither healed nor at peace, bound to a single, narrow purpose: find the one responsible, and finish what was interrupted.

He has never managed it. Every pilgrim who crossed that ground with him eventually reached the hills and went on into Emberveil — and Emberveil is a place built entirely around the idea that a person can set an old self down and pick up a new one. Halvern cannot follow past the last hill; the same hidden, mapless ground that keeps the settlement off every cartographer's chart keeps it from him too, and no trail he has ever held has survived that crossing. So he keeps to the approaches, guiding true whoever wanders them honestly, and asking — of nearly every stranger who passes, in the same handful of words — whether they remember a face he still cannot stop looking for.
