Hollowtine - The Peryton
Count the shadows on the cliff path. If one of them doesn't belong to anyone walking beside you, don't look up.
Role in Its Society
Emberfall's southeastern cliffs are not tamed by any settlement — no watch patrols them, no caravan road runs their length, and only the footpath climbing east out of Emberveil toward the Cinderfen ridgelines threads near their edge at all. Hollowtine's kind claims that stretch as absolutely as Ash'rift claims its forges. It is a solitary apex hunter of open sky and bare rock, the only true aerial predator these cliffs have ever answered to, and its presence is the reason the coastal path east of Emberveil is walked in daylight, in pairs, or not at all.
It does not compete with Kindlestrand's tide-hunters or the Emberflow Springs' steam-born things — its hunting ground is dry air and vertical stone, and nothing else in the region shares it. Locals speak of it obliquely, the way people speak of weather: something to be timed around, not confronted. Sevra Hollowshroud's people warn departing pilgrims to keep to the inland trail after dusk, a caution offered without much explanation — the way a warning about weather doesn't need one.
Appearance Description
Hollowtine stands near eight feet at the shoulder with wings spanning twenty, feathers the color of wet basalt fading to ash-grey at the primaries. Its body is unmistakably a raptor's — barrel-chested, taloned, built for a stooping dive — but the head is a stag's, crowned with a rack of dark antlers scored and pitted like old lava rock, as though something has been sharpening them against stone for years. Its eyes are a flat amber that doesn't reflect firelight the way an animal's should.
The single detail that undoes anyone who's studied it closely: it throws no shadow of its own. Whatever falls across the ground beneath it is shaped like a person — a stranger, always a stranger, arms and legs and a bowed head, dragging along the rock in whatever direction the sun demands. Travelers who've seen it in flight report a half-second where they scanned the cliff path for the person that shadow belonged to before understanding there wasn't one.
Backstory
Nobody in Emberveil can say how long Hollowtine's line has hunted these cliffs, and nobody has tried very hard to find out — the Reborn who settle there are occupied with their own histories, not a bird's. What's understood, passed traveler to traveler rather than written anywhere, is that its roost sits on an outcrop within sight of the Everflame Beacon, on a stretch of cliff where the local seabirds won't nest and the local gulls won't fish. Hollowtine does. It is, as far as anyone has counted, the only living thing on that coastline that shows the Beacon no caution at all — and that fact unsettles people who've lived beside stranger things than an unkillable flame.
It hunts the ridgeline path leading toward the Cinderfen Range and the thinner trails down toward Emberveil, favoring travelers who walk alone, at dusk, closer to the cliff edge than the terrain requires. Grieving pilgrims making the climb toward the Kindling are, by simple bad luck, exactly that kind of traveler — slow-moving, inward-facing, unaccompanied by choice. Whether Hollowtine seeks them out for that reason or simply finds them easiest to catch is a distinction the people of Emberveil have stopped trying to make. What they know for certain is narrower and more useful: it takes hearts, not names, and a body found on that trail is always found whole but for one wound.
