Hushmere - The Water Weird

Hushmere - The Water Weird

The falls have always whispered. Nobody could agree on what they were saying -- until the water started answering back.

Role in Its Society

Deep within the Verdant Weald, where the forest breaks into a run of cascading waterfalls known throughout the region as the Whispering Falls, alchemists and herbalists come to fill their vials with spray from a place long rumored to carry real magical properties. Most trips are unremarkable: a careful measure taken, a grateful nod to the water, a quiet walk home. It's the greedy hauls that go wrong — collection buckets and nets found shredded and abandoned on the rocks by morning, a bottled sample gone brackish and foul before it ever reaches a market stall. Ask any alchemist who's worked the Weald long enough and they'll tell you the same rule, passed down without anyone quite remembering who said it first: take only what the current gives you, and never go back for more the same day.

Appearance Description

Hushmere has no fixed shape so much as a fixed impression — a churning, upright column of falls-water roughly the height and breadth of a person, its "skin" a restless surface of foam and current that never quite settles into a face. Two darker patches near what would be its head suggest eyes only when it wants them to. The rest of the time it reads as nothing more than an unusually vigorous stretch of rapids. Fallen leaves, river stones, and the occasional bleached fish bone circulate endlessly through its body, caught in a current that never actually finishes flowing anywhere. When it wants to be seen, it rises out of the pool at the base of the falls with a groan of shifting water and stone. When it doesn't, an entire hunting party can walk within arm's reach without ever suspecting the pool wasn't just a pool.

Backstory

Nobody in the Weald claims to remember a time before Hushmere. Not the oldest herbalist guild records, not the handful of hedge druids who've made a study of the falls, not even the few travelers strange enough to have visited every season for decades. The most common belief, repeated with the shrug of people who've stopped needing it to be literally true, is that the falls were always going to wake up eventually. Torren's currents run through every drop of water in Gaiathrae, and something in the Whispering Falls' particular churn was, by old local reckoning, always a little more awake than most. Whether that's the real answer or just the story the Weald settled on because it was easier than admitting nobody knows, Hushmere has never bothered to confirm or deny it. It simply keeps doing what it's always apparently done: watching the water, and keeping score.
