Lampless - The Flameskull
The flame at the wreck's mast has no lamp to sit in, and no memory of who used to light it.
Role in Its Society
Lampless belongs to nobody. Emberstrand Cove has no watch, no salvage guild, no keeper's post to claim it, and Lampless has never asked for one — it simply holds station at the height a stern lantern would hang on the burned trade vessel locals call the Drift Grave, and it has held that height for longer than anyone currently walking the cove has been alive. Travelers who pass at dusk describe a small flame drifting at exactly mast-height, steady in the wind in a way no ordinary fire is steady, going dark only when something living gets close enough to threaten it. It does not patrol the wreck. It does not defend a hoard. It occupies one position with a persistence that looks, from a distance, like duty.
Whether the Drift Grave itself still shifts under moonlight, the way the old stories claim, is a question Lampless cannot answer and has never tried to. It has no opinion on the wreck's movement because it has no memory that reaches back far enough to compare one night's position to the last. It is not the reason anyone gives for the shifting, and it should not be — it is simply the other strange thing that happens to live at the same coordinates, indifferent to whichever mystery the locals are currently worried about.
Appearance Description
What's left is a bare, fire-blackened skull, its surface fused glassy in places where whatever flame consumed the ship burned hot enough to melt bone into something closer to obsidian. It hovers without visible support, tilting gently on unfelt currents, wreathed at all times in a low, steady fire that never gutters and never quite illuminates as far as its size should allow — enough to mark its position, never enough to see it clearly by. Up close the fire is a strange, guttering amber rather than a true orange, closer to the color of a banked coal than an open flame, and it carries no smoke and no smell of burning.
Empty sockets hold twin points of the same amber light, tracking movement with a deliberateness that unsettles more than any snarl could. When it moves with intent — toward an intruder, away from open water, into the wreck's collapsed hold — its flame brightens by degrees, the way a lantern's wick catches before it flares. There is no lantern. There has never been a lantern. That absence is exactly what the fishing families up and down Emberstrand mean when they call it Lampless.
Backstory
Somewhere in the Drift Grave's broken hold is the truth of what the vessel carried, who captained it, and what magical flame scorched it down to driftwood and slag on Emberstrand Cove's dark red-gold sand. Lampless is not that truth. It is what happened to one of the people aboard when the fire found them — a death violent and specific enough, in a place already thick with old elemental strangeness, to raise something back up. What rose kept a caster's mind and a caster's fire and lost everything else. It does not know its own name, the ship's name, the cargo in the hold, or why the flame that killed it burned the way it did. Ask it and it will answer honestly: there is nothing to recall, only a shape its remains have kept ever since.
That shape is a position, not a memory. Whatever role this person held on the ship — lookout, signal-keeper, someone whose job put them at the stern with a light in hand when the fire came — is gone as information but not as pattern. Lampless still holds the stern's height. It still brightens at dusk and dims toward dawn, on a schedule no one taught it and it cannot explain. Travelers who've tried to question it — with spells that pull answers from the dead, with patient interrogation, with nothing more than a friendly fire and a shared meal — have all come away with the same nothing. There is no one left inside to ask. That is precisely what makes Lampless useless as a witness to whatever really happened to the ship it never stops watching over.
It has not left the Drift Grave since the night it rose, and shows no sign it ever will. Emberstrand Cove's calm — the warmth the whole crescent is known for, fire meeting sea without the violence found elsewhere in Emberfall — seems to hold it as gently as it holds everything else here. Lampless has never tested that calm by wandering. It has only ever tested what comes near.
