Larkspur - The Sprite
The Glade doesn't judge you. The light does. And the light already knows what you did.
Role in Its Society
Larkspur is the only law the Emerald Glade keeps, and it is a small, exacting, entirely unbothered kind of law. Nothing built the Glade's reputation for beauty faster than the way its sky opens up on a clear night — and nothing protects the fact that anyone gets to see it more thoroughly than a Tiny fey most visitors never notice is watching. Locals from Greenbranch and Haltcross Hamlet who make the walk out to the Glade know there's a toll, even if nobody's ever agreed on what it costs: the honest and the kind-hearted come away remembering the best night of their lives, and the cruel come away remembering very little at all.
Larkspur does not patrol, does not fight for territory, and shows no interest in ruling anything beyond the single clearing it has claimed for longer than any Greenbranch elder can account for. It has never harmed a hunter for hunting, a woodcutter for cutting wood, or a lost traveler for simply being lost. What it cannot abide, and what it has never once let pass without answer, is cruelty performed for its own sake within sight of that sky.
Appearance Description
At rest, Larkspur is easy to mistake for a large firefly or a stray petal caught in an updraft — a hand-span sliver of a figure with dragonfly wings that shimmer violet-blue even in full dark, dressed in what looks like woven moth-down and old flower stalks gone silvery with age. Its face, on the rare occasions it allows itself to be seen clearly, is delicately pointed and unmistakably amused, like someone in on a joke it has no intention of explaining.
Its wings are the tell that matters. In the seconds it spends silently reading a stranger's heart, they slow to a near-stop and take on the color of whatever that stranger intends — a warm gold for kindness, a queasy green-grey for cruelty it hasn't decided how to answer yet. By the time a threat notices the color, Larkspur has usually already decided.

Backstory
Long before it had a name Greenbranch traders bothered learning, Larkspur was simply one of the Weald's rumored sprites — the kind spoken of in half-belief, blamed for missing trinkets and turned trail-markers, credited whenever a lost child wandered out of the trees unharmed and unable to explain how. It never sought a reputation grander than that. What fixed it to the Emerald Glade specifically, rather than the wider Weald, was a single ordinary evening: a trapper worked his way to the clearing's edge, took one long look at the clearest sky he would ever see in his life, and immediately began setting snares meant for whatever rare game the Glade's beauty might draw in to admire it.
Larkspur had watched a hundred travelers come and go from that clearing without lifting a finger. It watched this one differently. By morning the trapper had wandered three miles in the wrong direction with no memory of the night before, his snares left tangled and useless at the Glade's edge, and Larkspur had, without quite deciding to, taken up residence there instead of simply passing through. It has not left since, and the arrangement it settled into that night — the deserving see the sky, the undeserving lose the evening — hasn't changed either.
