Oarbreaker - The Plesiosaurus

Role in Its Society

Both of Emberfall's coasts end the same way: a stretch of shallows, then a line where the color of the water changes and the bottom drops away. Off Kindlestrand Shore that line sits past the black-sand shelf and its litter of tide-smoothed obsidian. Off Emberstrand Cove it sits past the last of the steaming tidepools, out where the Serrentide gliders finish their breaching runs and turn back rather than push further. Everyone who works either coast — divers, salt-boilers, anyone who's spent a season reading the water — knows the line by feel long before anyone teaches them its name for it. Past it belongs to Oarbreaker.

It isn't a ruler in the way land creatures are. Nobody worships it, bargains with it, or claims to have negotiated a safe crossing. It doesn't patrol a boundary so much as it simply is the boundary — the reason the gliders stay close enough to shore to skim rather than leap, the reason the glass-shell turtles that pass the surf on their slow migrations do so in a hurry, the reason a wading trip past the knee gets watched by whoever's still on the sand. On land, everyone can point to whose ground the deep ash flats belong to. Out past the last sandbar, the water keeps its own order, and it was never land's to name.

Appearance Description

Oarbreaker is old in the way only something that has never been caught can be old — bigger than any plesiosaur has any right to grow, its long, barrel-bodied trunk easily the length of a fishing boat, four broad flippers churning it through open water with a strength that looks lazy until it isn't. Its neck alone stretches longer than a man is tall, a slow, serpentine column that can lie flat and motionless on the surface chop for as long as it takes something to stop watching.

Decades in the warm, mineral-heavy shallows off both coasts have left their mark. Its hide has gone the deep, dull green-grey of storm water, mottled darker along the spine, and crusted in places with barnacles and the same tide-smoothed volcanic glass that litters Kindlestrand's beach — grit that has worked its way into old scars and never worked its way back out. Its small, flat head carries a mouth full of long, backward-curving teeth built for holding rather than tearing, and its eyes, set high and forward, are the pale, clouded amber of something that has spent a very long life looking up at the underside of the waves.

Backstory

Nobody on either coast remembers a first sighting, and nobody expects to see a last one. Oarbreaker has simply always been out past the drop-off — long before either shore had a name for the shallow water it keeps clear of glass-shell turtles that wander too far from the surf, long before anyone thought to measure how deep the Serrentide Sea runs off Emberstrand Cove. Whatever else it might once have been, decades of easy, uncontested hunting in warm water have made it enormous, patient, and entirely unbothered by anything that happens on land.

It doesn't defend a nest or a hoard. It doesn't need to. The open water off both of Emberfall's coasts has never had another predator large enough to dispute it, and Oarbreaker has never had a reason to test whether that's still true. It simply feeds where the feeding is good — where the gliders breach, where a careless current carries something smaller past the surf line — and everyone who works the water learns, eventually and usually secondhand, exactly how far out is too far.
