Introduction
Every dispute in Haltcross Hamlet eventually finds its way to the same cramped, ledger-lined office off the market commons, where a gnome barely tall enough to see over her own desk listens to both sides of an argument without once interrupting. Brightcrown's seal hangs on the wall behind her, official and a little dusty, but it isn't what actually keeps a hamlet of five different peoples from each other's throats during a busy trading season. That's her doing — one patient, precisely-tallied conversation at a time.

She dresses in a neat, slate-colored coat cut for practicality over fashion, with dozens of small pockets sized for wax seals, folded notes, and a collapsible tally-frame she fidgets with while she thinks. A small brass token bearing Brightcrown's crest hangs from a cord at her neck — the mark of her appointment, worn more out of duty than pride.
