Pip Quillfeather — Storyteller of Greenbranch

Introduction

Every village has one evening ritual it can't do without, and in Greenbranch it's this: once the last stall in the market square folds its awning and the smoke from the Jolly Angler's chimney thickens, a small, unhurried halfling climbs onto the low stone wall ringing the great oak, waits for quiet, and starts talking. By the time he's done, half the green has forgotten it was cold, a few children have fallen asleep against their parents' knees, and at least one traveler has left with a story they'll swear happened to them personally. That's Pip Quillfeather's doing — Greenbranch's storyteller, and the reason this small village remembers things it never actually experienced firsthand.

Appearance: Pip is a round-faced, sun-browned halfling somewhere past his fiftieth year, with wiry grey-brown curls escaping a battered wool cap and eyes that crinkle before he even reaches the good part of a story. He wears a patched traveler's coat with more pockets than seems reasonable, most of them stuffed with small trinkets he produces mid-tale like a magician producing coins — a chipped acorn, a scrap of red ribbon, a bent nail. He carries a smooth hazel walking staff notched all along its length, one groove for every telling of his favorite stories, and he is rarely seen without a small hand-drum slung at his hip for the tales that need a heartbeat under them.
