Quellach the Undrunk - The Gray Ooze
The pool by the crystal ledge has always been that color. Hasn't it?
Role in Its Society
Quellach holds no title, no faction, and no interest in either. What passes for its place in Emberveil's world is closer to a landmark than a citizen — a named danger, marked and worked around, the way a settlement learns to live beside a treacherous ford or an unstable scree slope.
The Emberflow Springs cool from a boiling, steam-choked heart at their center out to quieter margins where the water slows, sheds its heat, and drops the dissolved minerals it carried up from below. Those margin pools are exactly where Emberveil's crystal harvesters kneel to work, chipping raw essence crystal free of the rock lip where the springs deposit it slowest and cleanest. It is also exactly where Quellach rests. Nothing that lives at the boiling heart of the springs — where Thava Bronzebreath keeps her own restless watch — would recognize Quellach as kin. Quellach is not born of steam, and it does not hunt anything that lives in it. It is a creature of the cooling edge, patient in a way steam never learns to be.
Harvesters have learned a few tells over the years. A patch of pool that never quite matches the hue of the water around it. Stones nearby unnaturally smooth and bare of the fine sediment that clings to everything else within a stride of them. Ghera Quietseam, who has worked these margins longer than anyone else currently drawing breath in Emberveil, keeps a simple rule for anyone she trains: never kneel at a pool whose color you don't recognize from the day before. She has never explained why in so many words. She has also never lost an apprentice to one.
Appearance Description
At rest, Quellach is easy to mistake for the springs themselves — a shallow, cart-sized mass of grey-brown sediment banded with whatever mineral hue its current pool carries, iron-ochre in one margin, a sickly green-gold in another, shifting slowly as it drifts from pool to pool over the course of weeks. A crust of hardened deposit covers its upper surface, textured exactly like the vapor-rounded stone found throughout the springs, so that a still Quellach and a still puddle are, to the eye, the same thing.
Only when it moves does the illusion break. The crust cracks along old seams, the mass beneath heaves and thins, and threads of unrefined mineral glint deep inside it like veins caught in a cooling ingot — not glass, never glass, but something duller and heavier, more like wet, compacted ash fused half solid. It leaves no tracks. It leaves a faint smell of scorched metal and a patch of bare, glistening stone where it used to be.
Backstory
Gray oozes are patient opportunists found in damp, mineral-rich places throughout Eldervast, and by most accounts Quellach's lineage arrived at the Emberflow Springs the same unremarkable way any of them settle anywhere — following heat, following runoff, following whatever small, slow prey a cooling margin offers. What makes the springs' population different is time. Longer than anyone currently working the margins can account for, generation after generation of the springs' resident oozes have fed on nothing but the same mineral-saturated water and the small creatures it draws, until their bodies stopped merely tolerating the flux and started hoarding it.
Essence crystal forms in the springs wherever mineral-heavy water cools slowly enough and undisturbed enough for long enough. A resting ooze, motionless for weeks at a stretch, is about as undisturbed as anything in the Emberflow Springs ever gets. Quellach's mass carries, buried somewhere inside its bulk, a scatter of small, unrefined crystal nodules that formed there the same patient way they form anywhere else along the cooling pools — which is the only reason anyone risks working this close to it at all.
