Introduction

Nobody stumbles into Emberveil. You arrive carrying something — a name you cannot say out loud, a face that is starting to blur at the edges, a grief that has outlived the person it belonged to — and then the mist thins, and a dirt path you would swear was not there a moment ago carries you down between low curved roofs and ash-coloured walls, past lanterns burning a soft orange and wind chimes of bone, glass and cooled lava turning in air that smells of warm stone. Four hundred people live here, and most of them will let you pass in silence. One will not. Sevra Hollowshroud will meet you with a clay bowl of warm ash held in the crook of one arm, and before they ask why you have come, they will ask your full name — and they will remember it for the rest of your life.

"What the flame takes, we do not lose. We carry it, until it carries us."

Appearance: Sevra is tall and unhurried, built narrow, and stands the way old stone stands — without any apparent effort and without any intention of moving. Their skin is the flat grey of cooled ash, faintly seamed along the jaw and across the backs of the hands with hairline traces where something was broken once and set again by hands that were not a healer's. The eyes are pale and warm and catch lantern light the way mineral glass does. They wear a dark mantle of ash-woven cloth over layered grey linen, hood pushed back indoors, an ashcloth mask folded at the throat and rarely raised, and a shallow clay bowl carried in the crook of one arm the way another elder might carry a book. Their fingertips are permanently grey to the second knuckle. In a quiet room, people eventually notice that Sevra does not breathe unless they have decided to speak.
