Skorrath - The Nightmare

Skorrath - The Nightmare

Its hooves throw sparks, not dust. If you notice you're running alone, you're already too far from the fires.

Role in Its Society

Skorrath belongs to nothing Cinderglade claims. It is not a spirit the shamans petition, not a beast the herders track, and not a threat the High Scorcher has ever named at council. It is simply the thing every plainsrunner has heard about and hopes never to see: hoofbeats crossing the dark grass with no rider above them, sparks kicked up where there should only be dust.

The clans keep their answer to it simple and unspoken rather than ritual. Watch-fires stay lit at the edge of every camp, festival night or not. No one rides the open plain alone after dark, no matter how close to home the ride should be. Riders who break that rule and come back shaken don't get pressed for details — they get a blanket, a seat near the fire, and no questions until morning, if ever. The plainsrunners have a plain, practical name for it, nothing mythic: they call it the Black Runner, and they leave it at that.

Appearance Description

At a distance, in bad light, Skorrath could almost pass for a fine horse — tall, long-legged, moving with a smoothness no herd animal manages. It is only up close, or in full dark, that the wrongness shows. Its hide is coal black and cracked like cooling lava, with hairline seams of ember-orange glow running under the skin in the same places a real horse shows veins. Its mane and tail don't move like hair; they move like flame, trailing loose sparks that die out a few feet behind it and never catch on anything they shouldn't.

Its eyes are two steady coals, and its breath carries the smell of ash and hot iron rather than anything a horse should exhale. Where its hooves strike bare ground, they leave a scorched print that glows faintly and smokes for a minute or two before going dark and cold. It makes almost no sound when it runs — no hoofbeats, no snort, nothing but a low crackle, like a campfire settling, that seems to come from everywhere at once.

Backstory

Skorrath is a nightmare in the oldest sense the word ever had — one of the fiendish horses bred on the lower planes as war-mounts for creatures that value cruelty in a steed. Somewhere back along a chain no one in Cinderglade can trace, it slipped whatever bond or bridle once held it, and found its way through to the Material Plane the way its kind sometimes does: not summoned, not called, just loose, and hungry for somewhere that felt like home.

The volcanic night plains around Mount Vendetta suit it better than most places would. There's heat in the ground, fire in the sky some nights, and — every year, for three days — hundreds of riders pushing themselves past their own nerve with flaming spears held high. Skorrath doesn't join the Run of Karvax and it isn't part of it. It simply knows good hunting ground when it finds it, and stays close on the nights the plain is already full of people testing how brave they really are.

Scholars who study planar bleed sometimes point to Doli, whose domain is ambition curdled into corruption, as the likeliest origin for a creature like this — fire and speed with the purpose burned out of them, kept only for what they can take. It's a tidy answer from people who've never had to watch their own herd for the shape that doesn't belong. Cinderglade's shamans make no such claim and feel no need to. They don't have to know where it came from to know to keep the fires high.
