Skrell Wrackmaw - The Merrow
The lighthouse warns you off the rocks. It never warns you what's waiting in the water beneath them.

Role in Its Society
Merrow rarely build anything that could be called society — a mated pair, maybe a squabbling brood of young, nothing more. Skrell Wrackmaw doesn't even have that. It is the sole, undisputed thing that hunts the hidden shoals off the southwestern tip of the Brackish Brinelands, the same drowned reef that has been wrecking ships since long before anyone thought to build a lighthouse to warn them off it.
Skrell doesn't consider the reef "territory" the way a wolf considers a den — it considers the reef itself, the way a crab considers its shell. Every wreck that has ever gone down there belongs to it. Every bone in the silt is its bone, in the sense that matters to a merrow: already claimed, already counted, already chewed once and left for later.
The one relationship Skrell does maintain, in its crude and transactional way, is with the smugglers who use Brinecoast Outpost's hidden cove for their nighttime runs to and from Anchorest on the Shattered Coast. It isn't loyalty and it isn't fear. It's a bargain neither side has ever said out loud, and neither side particularly wants to.
Appearance Description
Skrell stands nearly eight feet from webbed heel to the crown of its skull, built like an ogre that has spent a very long time underwater — thick-shouldered, barrel-gutted, its greenish-grey hide gone mottled and pale where barnacles and blister-anemones have taken root along its spine and forearms. Kelp has grown into its mane in ropy, tangled clumps that never quite dry, even when it hauls itself onto the rocks at low tide.
Its eyes are a milky, near-colorless white, adapted to the black water beneath the shoals rather than open air, and it squints and snarls in direct sunlight. Its hands end in claws long enough to hook a rib cage clean through, and it favors a weapon it clearly didn't make: a broken ship's boat-hook, re-hafted with cord and gut-sinew into something between a harpoon and a gaff. Barnacle scarring runs down one forearm in a pattern almost too regular to be accidental — old wounds, reopened and regrown, over and over, in the same place.

Backstory
The shoals off Brinecoast Outpost were wrecking ships long before Eldric Thorne's — and later Nott Skuggar's — lighthouse ever cast a beam across them. Skrell has laired in the drowned rock beneath that reef for longer than either keeper has drawn breath, and it has never once thought of the light as anything but an inconvenience: a bright, steady thing that scares away most of the meals it used to be able to count on.
It adapted the way anything territorial and stubborn adapts. The honest traffic — merchant convoys, fishing boats working the cove in daylight — mostly gives the reef a wide berth now, chased off by the beacon exactly as the sailors' guild who built the tower intended. But the outpost's other traffic doesn't run by daylight, and it doesn't announce itself. Smugglers docking under cover of night to trade with whoever keeps Brinecoast's light burning have no interest in drawing attention to the reef, the cove, or anything living in either — which means they've never once reported what happens to a boat that goes quiet a little too far from shore.
Over time, without either side calling it anything so formal as a treaty, an arrangement took shape. Offal, spoiled catch, and things better left unasked-about get left at the tideline before a run. In exchange, Skrell keeps clear of the boats that come and go that particular night. It isn't trust. It's just old enough, and ugly enough, that both sides have stopped questioning why it works. Local sailors who lose a boat on a clear, windless night — no storm, no explanation — sometimes mutter that Torren's temper turned on them for no reason at all. They're not entirely wrong that something old and dangerous is at work in that water. They're just wrong about what.
