Snareloom - The Ettercap

Snareloom - The Ettercap

The birdsong stops first. Then the wind goes still. By the time you notice the silk, you're already caught in it.

Role in Its Society

Snareloom doesn't rule the Verdant Weald the way the old oak-wardens or the Great Oak's dryad do. She doesn't need to. She simply owns a stretch of it — web by web, branch by branch — deep where the whispering pines grow close enough to blot out the sky. Woodcutters and herbalists who work the Weald's undergrowth for medicinal roots and rare bark know the rule passed down from whoever taught them the trade: past the treeline where the light goes thin and grey, you don't harvest without checking the canopy first.

She isn't spoken of as a named horror. Most who live along the Weald's game trails have never heard "Snareloom" at all — to them she's a place, not a person: "the quiet stretch," "the hollow where the birds don't sing," a patch of forest that earns a wide detour rather than a story. Even Gruffjaw the Vile's gnoll raiders, who've made a habit of terrorizing the region's farms and roads, steer clear of her stand of pines. A gnoll can smell trouble it can't out-muscle, and a scout who doesn't return from that direction only needs to happen once.

Rangers and trappers who've spent real time in the deep Weald treat her less as a monster to slay and more as weather to respect — a hazard you plan around, not one you provoke for sport.

Appearance Description

Snareloom stands taller than a man, her lower body a bloated, spider-like abdomen mottled in bark-brown and moss-green that all but vanishes against the trunks she favors. Six jointed limbs — four spidery and clawed, two more humanlike and clutching — let her move as easily along a branch as across open ground. Coarse, web-strung fur clings to her upper frame, matted with pine needles, old silk, and the occasional glint of something she plucked off a kill and never let go of.

Her face is the worst of it: a cluster of small, glassy eyes set above a mouth of layered mandibles, always faintly wet with venom. When she holds still against a trunk — which is often — the eyes are the only part of her that seems alive, tracking movement long before the rest of her uncoils.

Backstory

Snareloom began as an ordinary ettercap who claimed an aging stand of pines after a hard winter thinned out the deep Weald's larger predators. There was nothing remarkable about the start of it — a stretch of undisturbed timber, good game trails, and no rivals willing to contest a patch of forest that far from any settlement. What made her different was patience. Where most of her kind spin and wait, Snareloom kept spinning, season after season, until a single ambush thicket had grown into a hollow's worth of canopy, web-line running from bough to bough thick enough to feel a deer's hoofbeat two hundred feet off.

She tends a brood now — egg sacs lashed high in the pines, guarded fiercely, and a scattering of young spiders she lets hunt the thicket's edges while she takes the deeper ground for herself. Trappers who've watched "empty" thickets for hours, certain nothing lived there, only to realize afterward that something had been watching them the whole time, are the ones who keep the stories alive. Not out of malice on her part — simply out of a predator that never stopped getting better at the one thing she does.
