Sorrelei Duskmourn - The Banshee

Sorrelei Duskmourn - The Banshee

The whispers in the ruins aren't wind. They're the last words of an entire city, sung on a loop.

Rich

In Darkwhisper Ruins, the wind carries no leaves — only the sound of a woman still finishing a song four hundred years old.

Role in Its Society

Sorrelei Duskmourn belongs to no faction, court, or council — she belongs to a city that no longer exists. Deep within the Ardent Woods, where the autumnal canopy thins into broken marble and root-choked colonnades, the Darkwhisper Ruins mark the grave of an elven settlement lost to time long before anyone thought to write down its name. Sorrelei was its Lament-Singer, and she is, in a sense, still on duty.

The Leafwatch Sentinels who guard the wider Ardent Woods have long since drawn a line around the ruins on every map they keep, marking it a place to steer travelers away from rather than patrol — not out of cowardice, but because nothing they've sent in has ever needed rescuing twice. The scholars of the Lunari Covenant in Moonbeam Village take a different view: they know the city's lament-magic predates their own study of lunar and celestial rites, and every few years a covenant researcher convinces themselves they'll be the one who can reason with her, listen to what's left of her song, and walk out again with something worth knowing. Most don't get past the first verse.

Appearance Description

Sorrelei retains the shape of the elf she was: tall, narrow-shouldered, her once-ceremonial mourning robes now little more than grey ribbons that drift as though underwater even in still air. Her face is composed, almost serene, until she opens her mouth — and then the illusion of peace collapses into something raw and unfinished. Her eyes are hollow, faintly silver, and fixed on a point in the middle distance that isn't quite anywhere in the room. Firelight and moonlight alike seem to bend around her, and for a half-second at the edge of vision, onlookers sometimes catch the ghost of towers burning behind her — a reflection of a skyline that hasn't stood in centuries.

Backstory

The city that once stood here was renowned, in its day, for the discipline of its funeral rites, precise enough that grieving families from across the Ardent Woods would send their dead here to be sung across properly. Its Lament-Singers — mourners sworn to guide the dying and the dead across the threshold into Aides' keeping — were considered among the finest in Eldervast. Sorrelei was the last and, by most accounts, the best of them.

No record survives of exactly what ended the city — only that it happened in hours, not days, and that it left no survivors to properly bury. Sorrelei began her final rite anyway, singing her people's souls toward the crossing Aides holds open for the honored dead. She never finished. Whatever cut her down mid-verse didn't just kill her — it severed the song, and severed her from the passage she'd spent her life guiding others through. She has been unable to complete it, or follow it herself, ever since.

The whispering that gives the ruins their name isn't wind through broken stone. It's the city's dead, still waiting on a note that never resolves.
