Thistlewick - The Boggle

It used to just hide your shoes. Now it wears your mother's face.

Role in Its Society

West of the Emerald Glade, where the Weald's forest thins into open, rolling hill country toward the Brackish Brinelands road, a single hillside cottage stands well apart from any village — close enough to the Glade's old magic to have once drawn something curious to its hearth, far enough from any neighbor that no one would hear if something ever went wrong there. Thistlewick has lived in that cottage's walls and rafters for longer than the family currently living in it has owned the deed, and it considers the place, and everyone who has ever slept under its roof, entirely its own business.

Boggles like Thistlewick aren't native to hill country the way sprites or dryads are woven into a specific grove — they attach themselves to a home, not a landscape, and Thistlewick has simply never left this one, generation after generation of family, because leaving has never once occurred to it as something it might want.

Appearance Description

When it wants to be seen at all, Thistlewick appears as a small, hunched fey no taller than a child's knee, skin the mottled gray-brown of old thatch, with too-wide eyes and a mouth that splits further than it should when it grins. Its fingers are long and thin, perfect for prying up floorboards or unlatching a shutter from the inside, and it moves in quick, unnatural bursts rather than a smooth walk. More often, though, it isn't seen at all — only heard, in the creak of a chair no one is sitting in, or glimpsed for half a second wearing the face of someone who is, at that very moment, standing somewhere else entirely.

Backstory

The Verdant Weald's hearths have always kept small courtesies for whatever unseen neighbors might be listening — a saucer left out, a crust of bread by the door, roadside offerings left beneath the wildflowers that grow near old shrines throughout the Weald. Thistlewick was, for a very long time, exactly the kind of house-spirit those courtesies are meant for: a little mischief in exchange for a little kindness, hidden thimbles returned by morning, a door that only stuck when someone forgot to say thank you.

That arrangement held for generations, family after family passing the cottage down without ever quite realizing they'd inherited a boggle along with it. It stopped holding with the family that currently lives there. They didn't know the old customs — no saucer of milk, no acknowledgment of the strange creaks and cold spots that every family before them had simply lived alongside — and Thistlewick, unaccustomed to being ignored rather than merely unseen, has spent the better part of a year deciding that ignoring it should come at a cost.
