Thornclutch - The Assassin Vine

Thornclutch - The Assassin Vine

The prettiest flowers in the Weald don't need water -- just someone close enough to grab.

Role in Its Society

Thornclutch has no clan, no den, no pack — only a stretch of undergrowth it has claimed along one of the many unmarked game trails that wind between Greenbranch and the deeper Weald. It plays no part in any society, and yet its presence has quietly reshaped how the region forages. Herbalists who once gathered rare blooms freely now travel in pairs, if they travel certain trails at all, and the going price for Weald bloom sap climbs a little higher every season a forager fails to come home. Rangers out of Edgewood Garrison keep a rough, ever-shifting mental map of "bad patches" — stretches of undergrowth that look a little too healthy, a little too still — and Thornclutch's ground sits near the top of that list, though few who've marked it have ever seen what marked it back.

When a trapper or a lone traveler goes missing near those trails, the story that spreads through Greenbranch is almost always the same one: Gruffjaw's gnolls, raiding further than usual again. Sometimes that's even true. More often, the truth is quieter, stiller, and rooted about ten feet off the path.

Appearance Description

At rest, Thornclutch is easy to miss for exactly what makes it dangerous: a thick, healthy tangle of vine some fifteen feet across, climbing an old oak or spilling across a fallen log, hung with clusters of vivid gold-and-violet blooms that look, to any eye trained to want them, exactly like the rare medicinal flowers Weald herbalists prize. Only up close does the wrongness show — the blooms never wilt, never drop petals, and never quite move the way real flowers do in a breeze. Beneath the leaves, the vine's true stems are corded and grey-green, thick as a man's wrist, studded with recurved thorns that fold flat until the moment they don't. When it strikes, the whole mass shudders awake at once, vines whipping outward far faster than anything rooted should be able to move.

Backstory

The Verdant Weald's soil is generous almost everywhere — its oaks and whispering pines, its ferns and wildflowers, grow thick and fast in a forest the old stories say is still watched over by whatever magic protects its more elusive residents. Most of what that generosity produces is simply more forest. Thornclutch is what happens when it produces something that started paying attention.

For years, an aging herbalist worked this particular hollow, cutting the vine back each season for the rare sap that welled from its stems when pruned — a bitter, potent reagent worth real coin in Greenbranch. She came less often as she grew older, and then one season she simply stopped coming at all. No one in the village can say for certain what became of her; the trail she used to walk is one of the ones rangers now mark as bad. Left untended, the vine kept growing the way it always had — only now nothing was cutting it back, and nothing was teaching it that a blade at its stem meant retreat rather than reflex. What began as a plant defending itself against the shears became, seasons later, a patch of forest that had learned the shears belonged to something worth catching first.
