Threnn the Unwaking - The Meenlock

You don't feel it climb onto your chest. You feel the dream get heavier, and heavier, and you can't wake up.

Role in Its Society

Nobody in Emberveil calls it a legend. They call it a reason not to sleep on the wrong side of a particular ridge.

Emberveil has no major road leading in or out — pilgrims making for the Veilstone Arch and the rebirth rite of the Kindling come in on foot, over a few miles of sheltering, mist-choked hills, often making camp somewhere along the way rather than arriving in a single push. That stretch of hillside is Threnn's country. It doesn't hunt travelers on the clear, well-worn approaches the settlement quietly steers newcomers toward; it hunts the folds and hollows just off them, where an exhausted, grieving pilgrim decides one more mile can wait until morning.

Sevra Hollowshroud, the Ash-Warden who greets arrivals at Emberveil's edge, has never said the word "dream-crawler" to an outsider. They simply ask, gently but firmly, which hollow a weary group means to sleep in that night, and steer them somewhere else if the answer is the wrong one. Nobody who has taken that advice has ever needed to know why. Nobody who hasn't has ever been able to say, afterward, exactly what happened.

Appearance Description

Threnn stands barely three feet tall on legs that bend one joint too many, its ash-grey hide slack and damp-looking even on dry ground, as though it had just climbed out of something wetter than mist. Its arms are disproportionately long, ending in narrow, six-fingered hands built for gripping rock, cloth, and throats with equal indifference. Its face is mostly eyes — two enormous, pale, lidless orbs that catch no light and give none back, set in a skull too small to hold them comfortably.

Faint threads glow beneath its skin, dull ember-orange, visible only when it's agitated or feeding on a sleeper's fear — the one trait that gives away a resting Threnn as something other than a heap of wet ash and volcanic grit. It makes almost no sound moving across open ground, but its breathing, when close, is audible and wrong: too slow, too even, matched deliberately to whoever it's stalking.

Backstory

Nobody in Emberveil claims to know for certain what Threnn is or where it came from, and Sevra — who preserves the Cinderscript and has spent longer than most listening to what pilgrims carry with them — has only ever offered a theory, never a fact: that things like Threnn are what gets left behind on the road to the Kindling. Not memories. Not names. Just the surplus of who a person used to be, the part too heavy to carry the last few miles and too stubborn to simply dissolve into the ash. Sevra's belief, never stated to outsiders as more than a guess, is that the hills sometimes gather that surplus into something small, hungry, and very patient — something that still wants a story to wear, even if it has to borrow one, one sleeping night at a time.

Whatever the truth of its origin, Threnn has hunted this particular stretch of misty hillside for longer than any living Emberveil resident can account for. It doesn't range far, doesn't seem to age, and has never once been seen in daylight. It knows the difference between a traveler who has made peace with whatever they're leaving behind and one who hasn't — and it has never once, in living memory, bothered with the former
