Where Lyreleaf's southern lane narrows and the cottage gardens give way to reed and mist, a low wooden gatehouse straddles the road, its barrier arm raised or lowered by a halfling who has never once let a cart through without a look inside first. Beyond her, the path disappears into the haze toward Saltspray Swamp. Behind her, the village she's sworn to keep honest waits on the other side. Tilly Marrowgate has worked this checkpoint for eleven years, and she knows exactly which of those two directions causes her more trouble.

Appearance: Tilly is a compact, sturdy halfling with sun-weathered skin and a perpetually damp wool cloak that never seems to fully dry in the swamp-fed mist. She wears a battered leather satchel across one shoulder, stuffed with tally slips and checkpoint tokens, and keeps a hooked quarterstaff close at hand more for prying open suspicious crates than for fighting. Her boots are always caked with the same reddish mud, no matter how often she cleans them, and she has the alert, unhurried stillness of someone who has spent over a decade watching a road for the one cart that isn't what it claims to be.
