Verdrax - The Green Dragon Wyrmling

Verdrax - The Green Dragon Wyrmling

It's still small enough to fit inside a hollow oak. That's exactly why nobody's found it yet.

Role in Its Society

Verdrax holds no domain, keeps no court, and has never once been seen in the sky over the Verdant Weald in daylight. It doesn't need to be. Deep past the last trail Edgewood's rangers bother to mark, in a hollow beneath a tangle of ancient oaks nobody in Greenbranch could point to on a map, a young green dragon has spent most of a decade doing exactly what its kind does best long before it ever breathes fire, frost, or acid at anyone: watching, waiting, and learning precisely how much of a "peaceful" forest it can quietly bend around itself.

It plays no open part in the Weald's affairs, and that is entirely the point. When a hunter goes missing or a supply cache turns up looted a season early, the story that spreads through Greenbranch is almost always the same one — Gruffjaw's gnolls, ranging further than usual again. Sometimes that's even true. More often, the truth has scales, and it has been sitting perfectly still less than thirty feet from the trail the whole time.

Appearance Description

At rest, Verdrax is easy to mistake for the forest itself — a long, low shape the color of deep bottle-glass fading to near-black in shadow, scales dulled with a deliberate coat of moss, bark-flake, and old leaf litter it never quite bothers to shed. Its horns still carry the soft, unfinished curve of youth, and its folded wings, mottled and ragged-edged, pass at a glance for a heap of dead canopy leaves caught against a fallen log. Only the eyes give it away to anyone patient enough to look twice: a poison-yellow that tracks movement with a stillness no true log has ever managed, set in a long, sinuous neck coiled low and close to the ground. It carries a faint, sweetish-acid smell that lingers on anything it has breathed near — the first warning most of its prey ever get, and usually the last thing they notice.

Backstory

Dragons are creatures of legend across Eldervast now — solitary, ancient, and vanishingly rare, the stuff of stories parents use to hush unruly children rather than a real, present danger. Since the age when the great wyrms turned from the sky and withdrew into the world's most remote and inhospitable places, a green dragon making its home in a gentle, temperate forest full of foragers and farmsteads is not supposed to happen. No one now living can say how Verdrax's egg came to rest in the Verdant Weald at all, whether abandoned, lost, or simply forgotten by whatever laid it — and nothing in the Weald's own long memory offers an answer. It hatched alone, small, and hungry in a forest that had no idea what it was sheltering, and it has kept that particular secret better than almost anything else living in the Weald.

For years it was content to be small game itself — hiding from foxes and hawks as much as hunting them, growing by inches and seasons in a hollow it slowly, patiently reshaped to hide it completely. It learned the rangers' patrol habits before it ever learned to fly well, learned which trails Greenbranch's herbalists favored, and began testing the smaller arts every green dragon eventually masters: a branch dragged just so to redirect a path, a boundary marker nudged a few feet off true, a set of false tracks laid to send a tracker the wrong way entirely. None of it was strictly necessary for a creature that size to survive. It did it anyway, because it enjoyed it, and because getting good at misdirection now meant it wouldn't have to rely on brute strength it didn't have yet.

The one habit it never quite grew out of is the oldest draconic vice of all. When it discovered that Gruffjaw's gnoll raiders were hauling stolen caravan goods deep into the forest interior to cache and split later, Verdrax started quietly helping itself to whatever glittered most before the gnolls came back for it. The band has never once suspected a dragon. They blame a rival gang, bad luck, or — more than one grizzled raider swears — a Weald spirit with a grudge against thieves. Verdrax, for its part, has never bothered to correct them.
