Role in Its Society

The Moonlit Clearing is the one part of the Ardent Woods every faction quietly agrees to treat as neutral ground. The Leafwatch Sentinels post no wardens here — it would be redundant, since Virelune keeps better order than any patrol ever could. The Lunari Covenant of Moonbeam Village considers the clearing sacred, sending initiates once a season for what they call the rite of first light. Wood elf hunters passing through leave silver coins or cut flowers at the standing stone at its center, out of respect, without always agreeing on why. Fey creatures, wandering spirits, and the occasional lost traveler all treat it as safe ground for conversation, on the long-standing understanding that nothing settled beneath Virelune's watch is allowed to end in a grudge.

Appearance Description

Virelune's coat holds the exact color of moonlit frost, and her mane seems to carry faint, captured starlight that never quite fades even at noon. Her spiral horn glows with the softest luminescence, brightening almost imperceptibly whenever she's paying close attention. Her eyes are the deep, quiet color of still water at night — and travelers who look into them for too long sometimes swear they can see the moon reflected there, whether or not one happens to be in the sky.

Backstory

Virelune has warded the Moonlit Clearing and its central standing stone for longer than any settlement now standing in the Ardent Woods has existed. The stone marks an old, gentle crossing point toward the Feywild — calmer and far better-mannered than the restless, unpredictable hollow of the Gloomden a day's walk south, but a threshold all the same, one the forest itself seems to have set quietly aside for meetings rather than mischief. For centuries, Virelune has made certain that whoever gathers there — fey emissaries settling old grievances, Lunari Covenant scholars at their rites, the occasional traveler pulled there by a dream they can't quite explain — leaves having kept whatever agreement or truce they arrived to make.

Travelers who dream of this clearing before ever setting foot in it are not imagining things. Certain minds are drawn here long before their feet arrive, and over the centuries Virelune has learned to recognize the ones the place itself seems to be calling. She has never once explained why, to any of them. That isn't precisely her secret to give away.
