Voskarr the Work-Fed - The Salamander

Voskarr the Work-Fed - The Salamander

The vent breathes when the work is good. When it isn't, something climbs out of it.

Role in Its Society

Voskarr holds no rank, keeps no kin, and would not recognise a chain of command if one were explained to it. Whatever role it has belongs to somebody else's society — Ash'rift's — and it was never offered, only assumed.

Ash'rift works metal the way no other settlement in Eldervast does: without coal, without an open flame, drawing the mountain's own heat up through forge vents cut down into the rock beneath the smelting floors. The heat arrives already alive. It has to be coaxed, throttled, read, and answered, and generations of orc and dragonborn smiths have got very good at doing exactly that. Somewhere in the long dark of that vent system, something got very good at it too.

The smiths call it Voskarr, the Work-Fed, and the arrangement between them is best described as employment neither party ever agreed to. Voskarr does not hunt, does not hoard, and has never once shown interest in a caravan, a granary, or a sleeping child. What it attends to is the work. When a billet is drawn true and the quench takes clean, the vents run steady and nobody sees anything at all. When a temper is botched, when good stock is spoiled through haste or laziness, when heat is drawn up and squandered on nothing — the draft in the vent changes direction, and the apprentice who caused it learns what the inside of a forge vent sounds like when something in it is climbing.

Ash'rift has made its peace with this, more or less. Forge-wardens stand the vent mouths not to keep Voskarr down but to keep the careless away from it. Forge-priests are split on what it actually is — an ancestor-flame that stayed to keep working, or simply a very old creature that learned a trade by watching — and Grorik Embermaw has pointedly declined to settle the argument. The fire takes what is weak, he says, and it does not much matter what shape the fire chooses to wear while doing it. Meanwhile the steel keeps coming out of Ash'rift better than anyone else's, and nobody in the settlement is in a hurry to test whether that is a coincidence.

Appearance Description

Voskarr is a long, banded serpent of living metal-heat, some eighteen feet from crown to tail-tip, with a heavy upper body that rears to the height of a tall orc when it wants to look at something properly. Its lower length coils, and the coils are the beautiful part: the whole animal is patterned like folded steel, dark waves and pale waves layered over one another, and the colours of tempering run visibly along it as it moves — straw at the shoulders, bronze at the ribs, deep violet and then that final cold blue toward the tail, sliding forward and back with its mood the way heat-colour crawls up a blade on the anvil.

What passes for its hide is hammerscale — the blue-black flakes that jump off hot iron under the hammer, layered here into overlapping plates the size of a hand. They lift when it is annoyed. They come off in a glowing drift when it moves fast, and they are still hot where they land.

It has no face worth the name. The head is a blunt, seamless mass like a billet pulled too early from the fire, split only where the mouth opens, and the light that comes out of that split is the exact orange of forging heat rather than the red of a burning building. Anyone who has stood a shift at a vent knows the difference on sight.

In its hands — and it does have hands, four-fingered, deliberate, disconcertingly steady — it carries a single length of unfinished iron stock. The billet is scarred with a thousand strikes and finished into nothing at all.

Backstory

Ash'rift's forge-records do not agree on which came first, the vents or Voskarr, and the keepers of those records have long since stopped pretending otherwise. One line has the first smiths cutting down into a heat that already had something in it. Another has the vents opened clean and empty, and something coming up into them afterward because the rhythm above was worth the climb. Both readings are old. Neither is provable. The honest answer preserved in the archive is that nobody knows, and that the not-knowing has never once interfered with the work.

What can be said is what the vents did to it, or what it did to the vents — the two are hard to separate now. This is not wildfire. Wildfire spends itself and dies. Voskarr is heat that has spent a very long time being used: drawn up on demand, held at a temperature, throttled back, let breathe again, over and over, until the shape of that discipline became the shape of the creature. It has no appetite for burning things down. It has an appetite for burning things correctly, and it has developed opinions.

The billet is its own private failure and it does not like to be asked about it. Voskarr can judge a weld at sixty feet. It can tell a rushed quench from a patient one by the sound alone. It cannot make anything. Its hands are strong and its heat is perfect and the work still comes out wrong every time, and it has been trying anyway for longer than anyone in Ash'rift has been alive. Smiths who have watched it work — from a respectful distance, in the small hours, when the floors are empty — describe it as the single most uncomfortable thing they have ever seen: something enormously powerful, doing a thing badly, in complete silence, and refusing to stop.

That is why the good work matters so much to it. It cannot make any. So it keeps everyone else's honest instead.
