Role in Its Society
Whisperbay belongs to no pack, no fey court, and no cause. Yeth hounds are creatures of the wild hunt in most tellings — bound in service to some capricious lord of the hunt, running in packs at another's command. Whisperbay answers to nothing. It has one territory and one purpose: the Cave of Whispering Steps, the narrow tunnel passage that lets travelers cross between the Brackish Brinelands and the Whispering Tundra without scaling the cliffs that otherwise wall the two regions apart.
That makes Whisperbay, however unintentionally, the single greatest obstacle to overland traffic between north and south. Smugglers who use the cave to move goods without official checkpoints know to leave offerings of coin or meat just past the entrance. Brineland guides who've made the crossing more than once know to count heads at both ends and never speak a companion's name aloud inside. Marshview Tower's watch dwarves, Brolin Stoutgrip and Torin Mudwalker, quietly discourage anyone from using the cave route at all if the overland tundra path is passable — a piece of advice they never fully explain, and that most travelers are wise enough not to question twice.
Appearance Description
Whisperbay is a hound's silhouette stretched a fraction too long in every limb — a lean, rangy shape built more of shadow and cold mist than solid flesh, visible mostly as a deeper darkness moving against the cave's gloom. Its eyes are the only fixed points on it: two low coals of dull red light, unblinking, set too far apart in a skull that seems to shift shape slightly depending on the angle it's viewed from.
Where its paws touch stone, they leave no print, but the bioluminescent fungus lining the tunnel walls dims and gutters wherever it passes, as if the glow itself flinches away. In direct torchlight it all but disappears, a heat-shimmer of a shape rather than a body — travelers who've glimpsed it at all mostly did so in total darkness, by the faint red glow of its eyes and the sudden absence of every other sound.

Backstory
Nobody in the Brinelands can say with any confidence how long Whisperbay has haunted the Cave of Whispering Steps, or whether it came before the ancient carved stairway or after. The stairway itself predates every settlement in the region — worn smooth by uncounted feet, its purpose and builders lost to time, with only a handful of unreadable carvings near the entrance hinting that whoever cut those steps meant for them to be used often, by someone. Whether Whisperbay is a leftover guardian of that lost purpose, or simply a predator that found the tunnel's echo useful, is a question nobody living has an answer to — and Whisperbay, understanding speech but incapable of it, isn't in a position to clear anything up.
What is documented, passed down in every Brineland family's version of the same warning, is the split in what the cave's whispers actually do. Some travelers who've made the crossing swear the voices in the tunnel guided them safely past a hidden drop or a slick patch of stone, warnings offered in a kindly, half-remembered cadence. Others insist those same voices, in the same tunnel, led them directly into a sinkhole or a black pool with cheerful, familiar confidence — right up until the moment the ground gave way. Both versions of that story are true, as far as anyone can tell. Whisperbay only accounts for one of them.
