Introduction

Everyone who visits Andisol expects the heat. It's a green, dripping, tropical place in the southwest of Emberfall, well clear of the lava, where the rain comes hard and the growth comes back faster than you can cut it. Heat is the one thing nobody there has ever had to pay for. Which is exactly why the gnome who keeps the glasshouses running spends most of her working life taking heat away rather than adding it, and why half of Andisol's harvest quietly depends on a woman with a soil probe and a very long memory for pipe.

Appearance: Wisla is short and thick through the forearms, with the browned, weathered look of someone who has spent decades in wet warmth and never once thought about it. Her hair is the color of damp straw going white at the temples, pulled back and wrapped under a faded cloth to keep it out of the valve collars. Fireglass goggles hang on a cord at her collarbone, smoked amber and scratched half-blind, pushed up onto her forehead more often than over her eyes. She wears a waxed canvas coat cut off at the elbows, because sleeves in a glasshouse just soak and cling, and heavy-soled boots for walkways that stay slick from dawn to dusk. Pale burn scars run in neat parallel lines up both forearms, the mark of forty years of reaching past a hot collar to feel a joint that a gauge can't tell her about. Her nails are permanently rimed with graphite packing and black soil, and she carries a long iron soil probe everywhere, using it as a walking staff on the terrace steps and forgetting she's holding it during conversation.
