While some residents and entrepreneurs are frustrated by Alfield's reputation as a mere stopover for travelers, most prefer the unhurried pace of small-town life.

The Alfield Wood flanks the town to the north and east, creating a diamond-shaped perimeter a few miles across. The Dustway and Harvest Path roads divide Alfield into four quarters, meandering through ramshackle wooden buildings until they converge at the recently rebuilt Candleglow Inn, located at the town's heart.
