Issue #3 - Into the Ardent Woods: A Missing Woodcarver, an Unfinished Song and a Festival Gone Wrong

This week in the Ardent Woods: a free information broker and a treehouse mystery, a banshee's four-hundred-year-old song for Local Heroes, and a festival-sabotage encounter for Heroes of the Realm.

Rich

Hello again, adventurers!

This week the newsletter heads into the Ardent Woods, where the leaves stay red, orange and gold all year. It's a region of elven treehouse villages, careful stewards of the forest, and a few ghosts that haven't finished what they started. There's a free information broker and a mystery for your table tonight, a grieving banshee and the woman who lays the dead to rest for Local Heroes, and a festival-sabotage encounter for Heroes of the Realm.

What's new in Gaiathrae: the Ardent Woods

The Ardent Woods sit on the north eastern coast of Eldervast, where the oaks, beeches and trumpet trees keep their fiery leaves through every season and elves live in treehouse villages joined by rope bridges. For every tree felled, the people here plant two saplings in its place, and outsiders are guided through the region's gateway, the village of Goldleaf Haven on the eastern fringe. That's where this week's story starts, as the village prepares for its Harvest Festival and the woodcarvers, couriers and diplomats of Goldleaf Haven go about their business. Farther in, among the broken marble of the Darkwhisper Ruins, a banshee is still singing the last verse of a rite four hundred years old. This issue follows those threads from the festival plaza to the ruins.

Bring the serenity of the Ardent Wood to life at your table with this collection of tracks set to mood and life of the vast forest! Be sure to follow Gaiathrae Soundscpaes on YouTube for all of the regional tracks as they drop.

Free this week: a character and a map

Free for everyone.

Jexi Quickwhistle: Gnome Courier NPC | D&D ReinKarnated
“Nothing travels faster than bad news—unless you’ve hired me and paid extra for discretion.”

Jexi knows who's sending what to whom across the Woods, and she trades rumors for favors. She's a ready-made source for any mystery you're running.

Treehouse: D&D 5e Battle Map | D&D ReinKarnated
Nestled high within the towering, ancient oak trees of a vibrant forest, the Woodcarver’s Treehouse exudes a sense of tranquil harmony and mystical allure.

Three platforms, a workshop of half-finished projects and cryptic blueprints, and a woodcarver who isn't home. Drop the party in and let the clues do the talking.

Put them together: Jexi's packet. Jexi was meant to drop a sealed packet at the Woodcarver's Treehouse, and it never arrived. The woodcarver is gone, the workshop is full of unfinished work, and someone has been through it already. She hires the party to find out who, and whether the packet is still worth delivering.

Spotlight duo: for Local Heroes and above

Both entries are exclusive to Local Hero members and above.

Ysolde Kneel: Beadswoman NPC | D&D ReinKarnated
“Stones remember the weight of those we loved. Ask gently, and they answer.”
Sorrelei Duskmourn - The Banshee
The whispers in the ruins aren’t wind. They’re the last words of an entire city, sung on a loop.

Adventure hook: The Unsung Verse. A fence in Goldleaf Haven is quietly selling half of a song called "The Unsung Verse." Ysolde Kneel, who has spent her life laying the restless dead down with patient hands, knows what it is and what finishing it would mean. She asks the party to buy the verse back, carry it to the Darkwhisper Ruins, and stand beside her when Sorrelei Duskmourn hears it. After four hundred years, nobody knows what answers when the rite finally ends. The party has to decide who else wants the verse, and whether the song should be finished at all.

Encounter of the Week: for Heroes of the Realm

Exclusive to Heroes of the Realm. Built for level 5, with a talk-first route for levels 3-4.

The Faerie Dragon at the Goldleaf Harvest Stage
Every festival ribbon knots itself, and 60 villagers turn on you. A hybrid encounter: calm the crowd and answer a faerie dragon's riddle.

Seris Goldweave needs the party to hold one corner of the plaza for two minutes while she talks the crowd down. The cause is a faerie dragon having the best afternoon of her life, and she only charms people who treat her well. It's a sidequest built on the "Festival Sabotage" hook from this issue's ICYMI adventure, so the two pair neatly.
