Ossra Stillfoot - Tremor-Reading Shaman of Cinderglade
Cinderglade's clans run on instinct; Ossra Stillfoot stands motionless and listens to what the ground itself is about to do. A tremor-reading shaman who guides Cindersight's vision quests, and who has begun feeling something in the earth she can't yet explain.
Introduction
Cinderglade runs. Its clans reenact the Flame-Spirit's gallop every Run of Karvax, and its people are plainsrunners before they are anything else, always moving, always reading what's ahead. Ossra Stillfoot is the one exception the whole enclave has learned to trust. When the herds grow restless for no reason anyone can name, when the ground hums wrong underfoot, Cinderglade doesn't look to the sky or the flame first. It looks for the old centaur who has stopped moving, planted a forehoof against bare earth, and gone very, very quiet.
Profile
Name: Ossra Stillfoot
Race: Centaur
Gender: Female
Alignment: Neutral
Role/Class: Tremor-Reading Shaman and Cindersight Guide of Cinderglade
Challenge Rating: 1
"The ground doesn't lie to flatter you. Stand still long enough, and it will tell you exactly what's coming."
Appearance: Ossra is broad and grey-maned, her centaur's flanks the color of cooled ash with darker dapples along the withers, and she moves at a walk so measured that newcomers sometimes mistake her for lame. She isn't. Her forehooves are worn smooth and slightly flattened along the sole, decades of being pressed flat to bare ground rather than lifted in a stride. A collection of small bored stones and fired-clay tokens hangs threaded on cord across her chest, each one scratched with a mark only she can read, and a plain ceremonial pike rides balanced across her back more often than in her hands. Her human half is lean and weathered, forearms and collarbone marked with old ash-burns from nights spent sitting too close to vents she was listening to rather than watching. She rarely speaks above a low, even register, and she almost never speaks first.

Backstory
Cinderglade's shamans have always read the mountain's moods as sacred omens, but the mountain speaks in more than one language, and not every listener hears the same part of it. Kaelyra Flamehoof, the clan's High Scorcher, has always read the fire: the height and color of a flame, the way ash lifts and settles, the shape smoke takes against the dark. Ossra reads what happens underneath all of that, the tremor itself, felt through hoof and bone before it ever reaches the eye. Both are honored. Neither claims the whole truth, and Cinderglade has long since stopped expecting them to agree.
Ossra came to this work the way most of Cinderglade's ground-readers do: by being unusually good at standing still. As a filly she was slower than her age-mates at everything that mattered to a plainsrunner clan, slower to run, slower to spook, slower to react to a sudden noise. What she was fast at, faster than anyone thought to test for, was noticing when the ground under her hooves had changed its rhythm half a heartbeat before anyone else felt it. An older shaman took her in hand less because she was gifted and more because she was patient, which turned out to be the rarer and more useful trait. She spent years learning to tell an ordinary settling tremor from a warning one, a warning one from nothing at all, by pressing a hoof flat to bare rock and simply waiting until the ground told her which.
She has led the young of Cinderglade beneath the Howling Rift for Cindersight more times than she can easily count, one clan of restless yearlings after another, each one sent into the smoke and the dark to ask the ancestors a question they don't yet know how to phrase. Ossra doesn't read their visions for them. She keeps the vigil itself steady, kneeling at the edge of the firelight with a hoof against the stone, so that whatever the smoke shows a frightened seventeen-year-old, the ground beneath them stays honest and calm. It is, she has come to believe, the actual work: not seeing the future, but making sure the people seeing it have somewhere solid to stand while they do.
Personality
- Moves Once, Deliberately: Where the rest of Cinderglade gallops, Ossra walks, and where a walk would do, she simply stands. She has trained the impulse to hurry almost entirely out of herself.
- Answers on the Ground's Time, Not Yours: Ask her a question and she will often say nothing for a long moment, hoof pressed to the earth, before she answers it. She isn't stalling. She's checking.
- Respectfully Unconvinced by Flame: She and Kaelyra genuinely respect each other and genuinely read the mountain differently. Ossra will say so plainly, without heat, even to the High Scorcher's face.
- Gentle with the Frightened, Blunt with Everyone Else: A trembling yearling before Cindersight gets patience and a steady voice. A grown warrior demanding a faster answer gets exactly the same pace as always.
- Keeps Her Own Counsel: She reports what the ground says. She is far more careful about saying what she thinks it means, and slower still to say when she isn't sure.

Secrets
- The Tremor With No Rhythm. For two seasons now, Ossra has felt something under the plains that doesn't match any pattern she was ever taught to name: not a warning tremor, not a settling one, arriving on no cycle she can predict. She hasn't told Kaelyra, because the flame has shown nothing to match it, and she won't stand in front of the clan and describe a fear she can't yet put a shape to. She keeps checking, alone, at odd hours.
- The Vigil She Couldn't Steady. Years ago, one of her Cindersight yearlings came back from beneath the Howling Rift and never fully came back at all, quieter, flinching at sounds no one else heard, unwilling to say what the smoke had shown him. Ossra has never decided whether she failed to keep the ground steady that night or whether some visions simply cost more than others. She has kept an unofficial, private eye on him ever since, and tells no one why.
- What She Actually Asks the Ancestors. Every guide is supposed to send the young in with a question and let the spirits answer it. Ossra has, for years now, quietly asked one of her own each time she kneels at the vigil-fire: whether she is still reading the ground right, or whether age has finally started dulling the one thing she was ever good at. She has never once told anyone she asks it, and never once gotten an answer she trusted.
Gear and Loot
- The Listening Stones: a cord strung with a dozen small bored stones and fired-clay tokens, each scratched with Ossra's own private shorthand for a tremor she has felt and later understood. Unreadable to anyone else; to her, thirty years of the mountain's moods in one hand.
- Ceremonial Pike: plain, well-balanced, more often carried across her back than used, but kept sharp out of habit rather than expectation.
- Smoke-Reed Bundle: dried reeds bound with cord, burned low and slow at the edge of a Cindersight vigil to keep the smoke thin and steady rather than choking. She tends this fire herself and lets no one else feed it.
- Vigil Blanket: a heavy, ash-grey woven wrap she sits on through an entire night beneath the Howling Rift without once standing to stretch. Worn thin in exactly one shape.
- Grounding Rattle: a dried gourd rattle used to mark the start and close of a vision-quest, its rhythm deliberately unhurried, meant to give a frightened mind something steady to follow back.
- A Worn Iron Hoof-Pick: unremarkable but always on her, used to clear her own hooves so nothing dulls what she can feel through them.

Non-Combat Abilities
- Feels the timing and rough direction of a coming tremor through her hooves well before it's visible to anyone else, often with enough warning to move a herd or a camp clear.
- Guides a Cindersight vigil safely through a full night, keeping the ground beneath a vision-quester steady regardless of what the smoke shows them.
- Calms spooked or stampeding livestock with nothing but a lowered voice and a still, planted stance, faster than most handlers manage with rope.
- Reads safe versus unstable footing across broken volcanic ground at a glance, and can walk a party across terrain she'd never let them cross alone.
- Knows the private, decades-deep shorthand of her own listening stones well enough to compare a new tremor against thirty years of old ones.
Roleplaying Tips
- Let her go still and silent before any important answer. A hoof pressed flat to the ground, eyes closed, is not hesitation, it's her actually checking.
- She never raises her voice, including when something is genuinely wrong. The calmer the words, the more seriously the party should take them.
- She disagrees with Kaelyra out loud, warmly and without drama, the way two old colleagues disagree about weather.
- Around frightened or grieving people, especially the young, her patience becomes almost total. Around impatience, it does not bend at all.
- She answers "what does it mean" far less readily than "what did you feel," and will gently redirect the question back to a novice's own senses whenever she can.
Adventure Integration
- The Tremor With No Rhythm. Ossra finally admits, only to the party, that she's been feeling something underground she can't identify, and asks them to help her track where it's strongest without alarming the clan.
- A Night Beneath the Howling Rift. A party member is invited, or required, to undergo a Cindersight vision-quest, with Ossra kneeling at the edge of the vigil-fire to keep the ground steady through whatever the smoke shows them.
- Herd on the Move. Ossra reads a tremor pattern that means a stretch of grazing ground will not be safe within days, and needs help moving a herd and its handlers before Cinderglade's own leadership is convinced there's any hurry.
- Flame Says Yes, Ground Says Wait. Kaelyra has read a favorable omen in the fire for a coming venture; Ossra has read something unsettled in the ground beneath the same question. The party is asked, gently, to help the clan decide whose reading to trust, without either shaman ever raising her voice about it.
- The Yearling Who Came Back Wrong. Years after a Cindersight vigil went strangely, Ossra quietly asks the party to check on the young centaur she's never stopped watching, without ever quite explaining why she still worries.
Conclusion
Ossra Stillfoot is the reason Cinderglade's plainsrunners can gallop as freely as they do: someone is always standing still, hoof to the earth, making sure the ground beneath the herd is telling the truth. She guides the clan's young through their first true night of visions and keeps them steady when the smoke shows them more than they expected. She listens where Kaelyra watches, and Cinderglade is safer for having both. Put her in front of a party, and she offers patience instead of urgency, a hand flat against the earth instead of a raised warning, and the quiet certainty that the mountain always tells the truth to whoever is willing to wait for it.
