Issue #2 - Into Brightcrown: Thieves, Coin and the Crimson Hand

This week in Brightcrown: a free Royal Herald and the Grand Announcement Steps, a thief and a doppelganger for Local Heroes, and a Royal Treasury encounter for levels 5-6.

Rich

Hello again, adventurers!

Last week we started something new, and thank you for the replies. This week the newsletter heads to the capital. The Kingdom of Brightcrown is Eldervast's human kingdom, a city of palaces, guild halls, and old grievances, and this week it's about coin: who counts it, who steals it, and who is quietly pulling the strings from the Sunken Ward. There's a free Royal Herald and a map for your table tonight, a thief and a face-changer for Local Heroes, and a Treasury encounter for Heroes of the Realm.

What's new in Gaiathrae: Brightcrown

Brightcrown is the human capital of Eldervast, a circular city with a river diverted around its walls as a moat and canals running between its wards. At its center, the palace overlooks the Grand Announcement Steps, where proclamations are read to the crowd in the market square below. Beneath the city lies the Sunken Ward, a subterranean district with no sunlight, where the Crimson Hand keeps its hideouts and where a thief named Saria Vex learned her trade. The Crimson Hand's reach doesn't stop at the walls. In the Verdant Weald, the village of Lyreleaf sits on the Weald's eastern edge, and the herbalist everyone trusts there hears about trouble before it arrives. This issue follows that thread through the city, down into the Sunken Ward, and out to Lyreleaf.

Free this week: a character and a map

Free for everyone.

Nyla Ashford: Royal Herald NPC | D&D ReinKarnated
“The Crown does not shout. The Crown announces. There is a considerable difference, and I am that difference.”

She controls the timing and framing of everything the Crown tells the city, which makes her the voice behind every proclamation on the steps below. Bring her in when your players need to learn what the Crown wants the city to believe.

Grand Announcement Steps: D&D 5e Battle | D&D ReinKarnated
The Grand Announcement Steps rise in elegant symmetry from the heart of the market square, broad white stone steps leading to the palace’s public-facing terrace.

Braziers, a forty-by-twenty terrace, a fountain in the square and three streets feeding it. It's a stage for a proclamation, a riot, or both.

Spotlight duo: for Local Heroes and above

Both entries are exclusive to Local Hero members and above.

Saria Nimble Vex: Thief NPC | D&D ReinKarnated
“If it’s locked, someone wanted it opened. They just didn’t know it yet.”
Hollowkith - The Doppelganger
Sorrel has tended Lyreleaf for eleven years. Nobody has ever asked where the real one went.

Adventure hook: The Remedy Letters. A noble's strongroom in Brightcrown has been opened without a scratch on the lock, and the one locksmith who could have managed it, Saria Vex of the Sunken Ward, swears it wasn't her. She'll say she knows who could have done it, and she hands the party a thread: a bundle of letters that look like ordinary swaps of herbal remedies, all leading to the village of Lyreleaf. There, the herbalist who has delivered half the village's children and always seems to know about trouble early is warm, helpful and adored. The party has to decide whether to trust Saria's word, whether to confront a beloved healer who may not be who she seems, and what happens to Lyreleaf if they're right.

Encounter of the Week: for Heroes of the Realm

Exclusive to Heroes of the Realm. Levels 5-6.

Rust in the Counting Hall
The Counting Hall's west gate crumbles to orange powder mid-audit. A rust monster eats the iron guarding the gold in this level 5-6 hybrid encounter.

Brennan Oakheel hired the party to witness a count, not to fight. He'll hand the strong-room keys to whichever character is wearing the least metal, and a six-round clock decides whether the Treasury's iron holds. This one is a fight won by arithmetic, so bring a plan for your armor.

Local Heroes: upgrade to unlock it.

Thanks for reading. Every issue lives in one part of Gaiathrae, and there's far more to show you in the weeks ahead. Hit reply and tell me what you'd run first, or what you'd like to see next. I read every one.

See you next Wednesday,
Rich
