What's new in Gaiathrae: the Verdant Weald

Everything in this issue happens in the Verdant Weald, the forest-and-farmland heart of Eldervast and home to the human Kingdom of Brightcrown. Start in the village of Greenbranch, where Myles Tapper keeps the Jolly Angler Inn and hears every rumor that passes through. Then head for Edgewood Garrison, the timber-and-stone outpost at the region's southern edge where tamed fields meet moor and swamp, and where Brother Ansel Thorwood rings the chapel bell at dawn. Finally, follow an old track toward Greenbranch and Lyreleaf to a farmhouse cellar that has gone quiet for the wrong reason. The gnoll trouble in The Menace of Verdant Weald ties these places together, and it's what this issue is built around.

Free this week: a character and a map

Free for everyone.

Myles Tapper: Innkeeper NPC for D&D 5e
A warm and gregarious innkeeper with a knack for storytelling and a love for his community. Myles Tapper is the heart of Greenbranch’s Jolly Angler Inn.

Myles has been collecting everyone's rumors for years. Put him behind the bar and your players have a source for any thread you want to pull.

Jolly Angler Inn: D&D 5e Battle Map
The Jolly Angler Inn is the beloved establishment nestled in the quaint village of Greenbranch.

It's Myles's inn, mapped: a main hall with a big stone fireplace, a bar, a kitchen with a service window, and a notice board by the door waiting for your quest hooks.

Spotlight duo: for Local Heroes and above

Brother Ansel Thorwood — Field Chaplain & Medic of Edgewood Garrison
Half chaplain, half battlefield medic, Brother Ansel Thorwood tends Edgewood Garrison’s small twin-shrine chapel and stitches up whatever the border throws at it -- treating friend, stranger, and doubt with the same steady hands.
Rotbloom - The Violet Fungus
The cellar’s been quiet for years. That should have been the warning, not the comfort.

Adventure hook: The Wrong Kind of Preserves.

A traveling merchant staggers into Edgewood's guest barracks, gravely ill. Brother Ansel finds nothing in his satchel of herbs that matches the sickness. The merchant's ledger traces it to a crate of preserves bought at a farmstead along the old track toward Greenbranch and Lyreleaf, and Ansel can't leave a full sickroom to chase it. He asks the party to go. The family blames damp in the cellar, but their youngest has stopped coming back up from errands quickly. What waits below is Rotbloom. The party has to decide whether to burn it out - or to take a living spore sample for the Lyreleaf alchemists and risk the cellar. They also have to decide what to tell a family that has been living above it.

Encounter of the Week: for Heroes of the Realm

Bandit Ambush on the Greenbranch Road
A teamster waves you toward a tipped cart; the treeline is watching. The bandit crew packs camp while you give chase in this Hybrid encounter.

Bandits are ambushing travelers near Greenbranch while the militia is stretched thin. A quick encounter built for level 3, can scale to 4.

While the gnolls keep the militia busy, a band of bandits has started ambushing travelers on a road near Greenbranch. Edgewood Garrison is stretched too thin to answer it, so the call goes out to adventurers. This week's encounter takes that thread from The Menace of Verdant Weald and builds it into a quick scene you can run in one session, exclusive to Heroes of the Realm.

That's issue one, and it's only the start. This one lives in the Verdant Weald, and there's far more of Gaiathrae to show you in the weeks ahead. Hit reply and tell me what you'd run first, or what you'd like to see next. I read every one.

See you next Wednesday,
