Issue #4: Into the Brackish Brinelands: Lanterns, Lost Names and a Light That Answers

This week in the Brackish Brinelands: a free bog guide and a reed-basin map, a lantern-keeper and a wraith for Local Heroes, and a lantern-rite encounter for level 5.

Rich

Hello again, adventurers!

This week the newsletter heads into the Brackish Brinelands, the misty estuary on Eldervast's western coast where land and sea blur together, villages stand on stilts, and every autumn the people float lanterns out over the water to remember those the marsh has taken. There's a free bog guide and a map for your table tonight, a lantern-keeper and a wraith who never finished her rite for Local Heroes, and a lantern-rite encounter for Heroes of the Realm.

What's new in Gaiathrae: the Brackish Brinelands

The Brackish Brinelands stretch along the western coast of Eldervast, a brackish estuary of marshes, bogs and slow channels where villagers build stilted houses and floating homes and travel by flat-bottomed skiff. The land is beautiful and dangerous in equal measure. Will-o'-wisps flicker at night and lure the unwary off safe paths, ancient barrows rise from black water, and rumors whisper of hidden covens practicing dark rites far from prying eyes. In autumn, villages hold a Lantern Lighting, releasing dozens of lanterns onto the water as a floating constellation, and in some places each lantern remembers someone lost in the marsh. Sodden Hollow is one of those stilted villages, built above the bones of a drowned town. This issue follows the lanterns across the water to the places where the light is not always what it seems.

Free this week: a character and a map

Free for everyone.

Delanna Mirewhisper: Swamp Guide NPC for D&D 5e | D&D ReinKarnated
A cautious swamp guide with a tragic past, navigating the Crimson Bog while searching for answers about her lost brother.

Delanna walks through mud and shallow water without slowing, shouts a warning when someone steps toward quicksand, and can often brew an antidote on the spot. She's the guide any marsh party wants and can rarely afford.

Sunken Reed Kill Zone: D&D 5e Battle Map
A drowned basin where the water turns deep green-black and the surface never sits still.

Waist-deep water, reed islands for cover, and visibility cut to 15 feet, so every step is a commitment. The easy lanes all seem to point toward the same pocket of water.

Put them together: Delanna's detour. Delanna leads the party into a drowned reed basin, then stops. Bone charms hang from cords, and thin lines steer the easy lanes toward one pocket of water. Someone built this place to herd travelers. She will take the party around, for double her price, if they can find another way across before dark, or they can go see who is waiting.

Fenra Underbough: Halfling | D&D ReinKarnated
“Light doesn’t stop the dark—but it tells you where you’re standing.”
Hollowmourn - The Wraith
Listen past the silence. Somewhere under the black water, a bell no one rang is still tolling - and it's counting you.

Adventure hook: The Erased Names. After this autumn's Lantern Lighting, several of Fenra Underbough's remembrance lanterns never drift home, and names carved into the remembrance stones are being erased overnight. Fenra checks her ledger and finds the pattern: every erased name belongs to someone the Sunken Barrows swallowed. She asks the party to carry fresh lanterns to the Barrows' edge and read the names aloud, where a bell no one rang is said to answer. Hollowmourn has been trying to finish a rite for longer than anyone remembers. The party has to decide whether to help her end it, and what ending it might cost.

Encounter of the Week: for Heroes of the Realm

Exclusive to Heroes of the Realm. Built for level 5, party of 4.

The Naming at Lantern Rite Crossing
Lantern light spills across three shrouded dead as the marsh answers in their voices. Hybrid, level 5: finish the rite before the light claims someone.

Ghaldrin Lowchant has six Names to say and won't say them in the dark. The party's job is to hold the middle of the causeway, keep the lanterns lit, and decide who reads which Name while a light in the reeds calls out in voices it has overheard. It's a prologue to this issue's ICYMI adventure, and it ends with a message that points the party toward Sodden Hollow.

ICYMI: The Brinehart Coven

Brinehart Coven: D&D 5e One-Shot | D&D ReinKarnated
In the mist-shrouded Brackish Brinelands lies the stilted village of Sodden Hollow, where a missing child may be the catalyst for a dangerous ritual being planned by a coven of hags.

If this week's lanterns and lost names left you wanting a whole adventure, our full Brinehart Coven runs a campaign for four characters of levels 5-8, set in the stilted village of Sodden Hollow. It's exclusive to Heroes of the Realm.
