Catrin Mire - Keeper of Watery Graves

Catrin Mire - Keeper of Watery Graves

“Lay the token true, and even the tide will hush.”

Rich

Name: Catrin Mire
Race: Human
Role: Gravedigger, funerary artisan, “bone-mender”
Appearance: Weather-tanned and reed-lean, Catrin keeps her gray-black hair in a practical bun pinned with bone tokens. She wears waterproofed canvas over linen, the hems salted white, and high marsh boots stained with peat. A coil of rope, a small pry-bar, and neatly wrapped bundles of grave tokens (ribbons, rings, carved shells) hang from her belt. Her hands are steady, nails squared from toolwork; a threadbare charm—a child’s tin fish—dangles at her throat.

Backstory

Born to dock-workers in Quagdire, Catrin grew up ferrying mourners through flooded lanes to above-ground crypt-rafts. Storms and spring tides often disinter the dead here; Catrin apprenticed under the last bone-mender, learning to identify families by their tokens and to rebury respectfully before rumor turns to haunting. She keeps meticulous ledgers of resting places and token-matches, mediating quarrels when brine has jumbled the lineages. Catrin doesn’t judge—she restores. In a place where the swamp takes as quickly as it gives, that matters. (Stilted living, boat travel, and artisanal culture are hallmarks of Saltspray Swamp and Quagdire.)
