Joric Kettlewhip — Toffee-Puller & Night-Soother

“Chew slow at midnight and let the bad dreams stick to the sugar, not to you.”

Rich

Name: Joric Kettlewhip
Race: Human
Role: : Toffee maker, caravan night-soother
Appearance: Joric is compact and wiry, mid-forties, with laugh-creased eyes and calloused hands glossed with a sheen of pulled sugar. His hair is clipped short beneath a flour-dusted cap; a striped neckerchief keeps sweat out of the batch. He wears a stained canvas apron over traveler’s layers, and carries a polished pulling paddle and braided lengths of cooled toffee rope. A thin pane of amber sugar, wrapped in oiled paper, rides in a hard case at his belt.

Backstory

Raised on the wander-roads, Joric learned that a hot sweet can quiet a rough night. He apprenticed with a traveling confectioner who claimed sugar “takes the shape of what you feed it”—love, laughter… or nightmares. Years ago in Wayfarer’s Fold, he saved a child from a night-terror by working a sugar pane, pulling the dream’s edges into the cooling sheet until the terror thinned and stilled. Since then his midnight toffees have become tradition: a line of travelers waiting with blankets round their shoulders, steam rising from the kettles, and a hush settling as the road unknots from their shoulders.
