Appearance: Koro-of-the-Last-Rain is immense even by tortle standards, his shell rising like a weathered hillock from the marsh floor. The shell’s surface is deeply grooved, bearing natural channels where rainwater gathers and slowly drains—patterns he refuses to clean, believing they “remember storms better than he does.” Lichen, moss, and reed pollen cling naturally to him, forming a living record of recent seasons.
His skin is dark umber and slate, cracked from sun and salt but carefully tended with herbal oils. Thick cords of driftwood, seedpods, and bone markers hang across his chest and staff. His eyes are ancient and patient, the kind that do not hurry answers. When he moves, the marsh seems to adjust around him rather than resist.
Backstory
Koro-of-the-Last-Rain was once simply Koro, a quiet listener among his clutch. During a season of catastrophic drought followed by sudden flooding, he alone warned settlements to move before the rain returned. Most ignored him.
When the flood came, it erased entire hamlets.
Koro stayed behind, guiding survivors through rising water for days without rest. When the rain finally ceased, those who lived began calling him Koro-of-the-Last-Rain, marking the moment the marsh changed—and so did he.
Since then, Koro has served as a living threshold between warning and consequence. He does not predict storms. He recognizes inevitability. His role is not to stop disaster, but to give others a chance to step aside.
