“Measure the ice. Trust the numbers. Then take one careful step.”

Name: Oskar Icequill
Race: Vedalken
Role: : Cartographer & Sea-Ice Surveyor
Appearance: Tall and spare, Oskar is a hairless, blue-skinned humanoid with a high, smooth brow and fine, porcelain-like features. Faint gill-lines scallop the sides of his neck, and a thin frost sheen often rims his long, ink-stained fingers. His eyes are pale, glassy cyan with an analytical calm. He wears layered winter blacks beneath a seal-lined overcoat, a leather chest harness fitted with calipers, gauges, and dye flasks, and light crampon greaves. A survey pole (steel-shod quarterstaff) rides in one hand; a map case, navigator’s tools, and a light crossbow hang from a bandolier. A lens-crown (a simple flip-down magnifier) perches over his nose.

Backstory

Oskar came north from a river academy in the Verdant Weald to study freeze-up cycles, then never left. Frosthold’s lake taught him humility: pressure ridges that move like sleeping beasts and black leads that open without sound. He founded the Icequill Chartorium & Cupola on the lakeshore, where apprentices draft tide-marks, thickness charts, and whiteout flow maps for Varrik’s Ice Patrol, Borik’s quay crews, and Thrain’s convoy planners. When the Rimewake Channel stirs, Oskar is already on the ice with auger and dye, re-marking safe seams and posting handbills at Market Square to redirect traffic. He respects Sevi’s quiet intel, swaps lamp-glare studies with Neris, and argues amiably with Father Halvor about whether faith or numbers keep people calm. For Oskar, truth is a draft that improves with every careful line.
