Thalvorn - The Bronze Dragon Wyrmling

Thalvorn - The Bronze Dragon Wyrmling

Role in Its Society:

Thalvorn has established himself as the self-appointed Warden of the Sapphire Cove shallows — a stretch of Veridya's coastal waters where the tide pools are deep, the wrecks are old, and the fishing communities that work the cove have developed, over the past two years, a complicated relationship with a wyrmling-sized bronze dragon who shows up uninvited whenever a ship is in distress and then wants to discuss the meteorological conditions that caused it at length afterward.

He is not yet large enough to be genuinely useful in a maritime crisis, a fact he is acutely aware of and which motivates him more than anything else. What he lacks in size he compensates for with preparation — he has memorized the tidal charts, storm pattern histories, and navigational hazards of Sapphire Cove to a degree that exceeds any human sailor working the same waters. The fishing community of Driftwood Vale, whose boats work the cove's outer reaches, has quietly begun consulting him about weather windows before departing, framed diplomatically as "checking conditions" rather than "asking the dragon," which Thalvorn accepts because he understands the social function of the framing even if he finds it unnecessary.

He is waiting, with considerable impatience, to be large enough to actually pull a ship to safety with his own claws. In the meantime, he guides them.

Appearance Description:

Thalvorn is a wyrmling bronze dragon, roughly four and a half feet from nose to tail with the broad-shouldered, sturdy build that distinguishes bronze dragons from their sleeker metallic cousins. His scales are a warm, sea-burnished bronze — deeper and richer than Fizzelwick's brass, with a greenish undertone along the neck and spine that intensifies in saltwater light, giving him the coloration of old nautical metalwork that has weathered beautifully. His underbelly scales are paler, a softer bronze-cream, and the frill-ridges that run from his jaw along his neck are broader and more prominent than a brass wyrmling's, edged in deep sea-green.

His snout is wider and more angular, giving him a solid, serious expression that his amber-green eyes complicate — they have the focused warmth of a creature that is simultaneously doing three things and remaining present for all of them. His wings are broad relative to his body size, the membrane a deep greenish-bronze that appears almost teal when wet. He is almost always wet. Small barnacles have begun to establish themselves on the underside of his rear left claw, which he considers a point of pride.

He smells of salt water and the particular mineral tang of deep tide pools.

Backstory:

Thalvorn hatched from an egg his mother, an adult bronze dragon named Serrathis Wavecrown, cached in a sea-cave on Veridya's Sapphire Cove coastline before departing to assist with a naval conflict three seas away — a departure she described as temporary and which has now lasted two years, long enough for Thalvorn to hatch, explore the cove, establish a territorial claim, and develop a full range of opinions about her timeline.

His earliest defining experience was witnessing, at four months old, a Driftwood Vale fishing vessel founder in an unexpected squall thirty yards from the cove entrance. He was too small to help directly — too small to tow the boat, too small to be heard over the wind, too small to do anything except watch from the rocks while three sailors made it to shore and one did not. He has remembered the name of the one who didn't. He keeps it on a piece of driftwood in the sea-cave, scored into the wood with his claws, and he has added two other names since then — two other Driftwood Vale sailors whose vessels he tracked on their final voyages, helpless to intervene at his current size.

This is not survivor's guilt. It is a list of debts that will be paid when he is larger.
