Vesna Coldmarch – Sergeant of the Gate Ward

Vesna Coldmarch – Sergeant of the Gate Ward

"You've come through this gate eleven times in the past two months. Nine of those times, the cart was heavier coming in than going out. I'm going to need you to explain the other two."

Name: Vesna Coldmarch
Race: Half-Orc
Role/Class: Sergeant of the Gate Ward
Appearance: Vesna Coldmarch is thirty-eight, tall even by half-orc standards, with a lean, angular build that speaks to a life of long shifts and efficient movement rather than any particular dedication to looking imposing — though she manages imposing without effort. Her skin is a deep grey-green, her hair black and pulled back in a tight functional braid, and her lower canines show just slightly past her lip in a way that is not a sneer but that people occasionally misread as one until they've known her long enough to recognize that her actual expression of displeasure is considerably quieter and considerably more concerning. She wears the standard gate sergeant's uniform — deep blue with brass fittings — with one personal addition: a wide leather belt with a row of small carved wooden markers along the inside, each representing a smuggling route she's closed. There are nineteen of them. She has not told her superiors about the twentieth, which she is still working on.

Backstory

Vesna Coldmarch grew up in Brightcrown's outer ward, the daughter of a half-orc laborer and a human dockworker, in a neighborhood close enough to the city's main gates to spend her childhood watching what came through them. She noticed early that the guards checked some carts thoroughly and waved others through with barely a glance, and that the pattern of which was which did not correlate with anything obvious about the carts themselves. She filed this observation away and did not think about it again until she joined the guard at twenty-two and realized the pattern she'd noticed as a child was still there, eighteen years later, maintained by people who had decided it wasn't their problem.

She made it her problem. She spent five years at gate duty learning every method of concealment, misdirection, and documentation fraud in circulation and another five years systematically closing the routes that relied on them. She made sergeant on the strength of a record that no one in the gate ward has come close to matching. She is not well-loved by the merchant class or by the members of the guard who preferred the previous arrangement. She is respected by almost everyone, which she considers the more durable outcome.
