Vessur - The Oni / Ogre-Mage
“The gates do not fall. They forget to be closed.”
Role in Its Society:
Vessur is Jarl Hrokan’s night engine—the sorcerous mind that makes ladders taller, walls thinner, and sentries drowsy. He glides over palisades under a cloak of darkness, whispers orders in a captain’s voice, and opens one precise door while the warband surges. Orog crews trust his signals; tribal warriors follow his lantern through the snow; ice trolls wait for his shadow to fall across a wall before they climb. When Vessur moves, sieges turn from noise into choreography.
Appearance Description:
A towering blue-skinned giant-kin with tusked smile and ice-pale eyes. Whitish hair in a high knot, lacquered lamellar over furs, and a long black-lacquer lantern hanging at his hip that drinks light instead of giving it. His glaive’s blade is wave-curved and banded with frost runes. A thin line of rime trails each footstep. When he smiles, his breath smokes like ink spilled on snow.

Backstory:
Vessur once served a coastal jarl who squandered troops on rage. He survived, learned, and defected: winter favors plans. Hrokan offered him engines, crews, and the freedom to design victories. Over years, Vessur mapped the keep-heights of half a coast, cataloged gate carpentry quirks, and wrote a doctrine: darkness breaks courage before wood. He insists his name never be shouted in battle—only breathed, like weather.
