Inspection Yard
The Inspection Yard lies just inside Brightcrown’s eastern gate, a broad cobblestone space where commerce, travelers, and scrutiny converge.
Framed between the outer portcullis and the inner ward wall, the yard functions as the city’s first line of control for wagons and caravans entering from the eastern roads. Two narrow guard booths flank the yard, their stone walls pierced with arrow slits and small interior doors that allow watchmen to observe arrivals while remaining protected. Between them stretches the open inspection ground where carts are halted, manifests reviewed, and contraband quietly discovered.
At the center of the yard run two parallel inspection lanes marked by iron posts linked with chain barriers. These can be raised or lowered by a lever housed within the north booth, allowing guards to funnel traffic through controlled checkpoints. Along the eastern side stands a large stone weighing platform fitted with iron scales capable of handling a fully loaded wagon. Two lanterns mounted on iron posts cast steady light across the yard at night, illuminating the cobbles and the towering portcullis mechanisms above.
Intended Use:
The Inspection Yard is ideal for encounters involving checkpoints, smuggling attempts, tense inspections, or sudden ambushes at the city gates. The space naturally supports confrontational roleplay as guards question travelers, search cargo, and verify trade documents. Because it sits between two portcullises, the yard can quickly become a controlled trap — sealed from both directions if the mechanisms are activated from the guard booths.
