Nightfang - The Displacer Beast
Along the moonlit forest trails of the Verdant Weald, hunters speak of a flicker in the corner of the eye—a shimmer where something should be, then the sudden flash of claws.
Nightfang the Unseen, a massive displacer beast with a coat like a starless sky, prowls the borderlands between wood and plain. It doesn’t stalk prey for food alone—it enjoys the hunt.
Role in Its Society:
Displacer beasts are pack hunters, but Nightfang is an outcast. It roams alone, striking fear into travelers, caravans, and hunters who dare to travel after dark. Some say it once belonged to a noble’s menagerie before escaping into the wild; others believe it is the last of an elite breeding line trained for war. Regardless, Nightfang’s presence has closed roads and emptied villages along the Weald’s edge.
Appearance Description:
Nightfang’s sleek, muscular body is covered in short, velvety fur so dark it seems to swallow light, broken only by faint patterns like shifting shadows. Its feline face bears pale, intelligent eyes. From its shoulders extend two long, whip-like tentacles tipped with spined pads. Its form appears to shimmer and blur, as if reality itself refuses to hold it still.

Backstory:
Local legend tells of a duel between Nightfang and an elven ranger champion, lasting three nights and ending in the ranger’s disappearance. Since then, it has been seen only in flashes—sometimes too close for comfort. Those who survive speak of being toyed with, the beast always just out of reach, until exhaustion made them easy prey.
